Okay, okay, I’m late. Sorry about this. But I’m going to go back in time about a month (March 12th to be exact) and tell you about one of the best nights of the year!

The International Banquet is an annual tradition that I have had the great pleasure of enjoying for the past three years. About 10% of Houghton students are internationals/TCKs and this event, put on by the Intercultural Student Association (ISA), is a chance to celebrate the world and for all of us to show off …

Returning home!

Hello blog readers!

Since I last wrote I officially made it back from Egypt to the U.S. of A., back to Texas (home) for Christmas break with my family, and now back to snowy New York for the semester!

“Re-entry” is a study abroad buzz word: that is, the journey of reflecting on time abroad and adjusting back to the culture at home. Truthfully, it’s a phrase that reminds me more of astronauts dramatically crashing into the atmosphere, but I’ve been really thankful for the way the entire Houghton community has been supportive and helpful in this process. We will be staying in the outskirts of Iringa

Hello Houghton!! I am shortly going to be heading off for an exciting 3-month adventure in Tanzania! I am going with the semester study-abroad “Houghton in Tanzania” program, and cannot wait to begin. I can’t wait to see and experience all that God has in store for me in Africa!
Firstly, I leave for Tanzania on Wednesday, January 19, and will be coming back to Houghton on …

My Fiance Jenny and I in Tallinn, Estonia

Ahh, finals week. That time of stress and finishing. I have three finals down and one to go before I can go home. During this time I am reflecting on this past semester and very much looking forward to the next one. This reminds me that I have neglected to share with you what is most definitely the most exciting development in my life this past semester.

I got engaged! That picture up there is my beautiful fiance Jenny sitting with me in Old Town Tallinn, Estonia. I lived in Estonia for four years prior to coming to Houghton and the summer between our freshmen and sophomore …

Hope

Friday, December 03, 2010, at 1:10 am

Sometimes, especially these kinds of times – you know the times near the end of the semester, I feel a little (or a lot) void of hope. Sometimes it hard to keep your head afloat in the midst of all this mess. . . But as I sit here in Java 101 at the World Aids Day Coffeehouse I cannot help but feel an immense amount of hope.

The thing that is driving me most towards hope right now is the painting that is sitting on stage behind the performer, Taylor Wilding. The painting, by Amy Coon and Andrea Pacheco, is deceptively simple- positioned one way it says “AIDS” in red paint. But, if you flip the painting right over it says “HOPE” in black paint. The power of …
