Things I’m involved in at Houghton:
From Bible studies to tutoring, Global Christian Fellowship and Gadfly – I've been blessed with the opportunity to be involved in all sorts of wonderful things throughout my time here. One of my favorite things about Houghton is also the emphasis on global engagement. In these past few years I've been able to study at Oxford University, visit Israel with Dr. Schultz, and spend an amazing May-term in Morocco. In this coming semester I will be studying in Egypt—and hopefully sharing these experiences with you! I'm quite excited!
Houghton in five words or less:
Working hard & sharing life together
Myself in five words or less:
Very blessed, bibliophile, aspiring-foodie, child-like-adventurer, lover-of-Saturday-afternoon-naps
More about me:
I think that the best way to spend an afternoon is to curl up on the couch in Java with a good book, or to share tea and conversation with a dear friend. I also enjoy studying language, painting, cooking/eating delicious food, and finding any excuse to use my antique typewriter.
What I hope to be doing someday:
Before anything else, I hope to always be loving God and loving people. I am also really interested in international education development—specifically in the Islamic world, and hope to work there one day.

Days, weeks, & years previous: Went to classes, studied abroad, wrote lots of papers, learned different languages, went on lots of adventures.

Monday, May 9th: Took final-final-exam

Tuesday, May 10th:  Turned in Senior Seminar Project

Wednesday, May 11th: DONE!

Truthfully, I haven’t fully realized that I am indeed—totally and completely—done with my undergraduate degree here at Houghton! It’s bittersweet to think about; I’m happy and excited to be moving on to new things, and I will also miss the my sweet friends and professors and all of the good memories I have in this place.

While the end was busy, it finished well, …

Spring ramblings

Thursday, March 17, 2011, at 12:19 pm

Look! I'm graduating!

I can hardly believe how quickly time passes by! It’s already mid-March and Spring feels right around the corner here at Houghton (I hope, at least!). These past few weeks have been filled with excitement for me—graduate school acceptances (For my masters and certification in education), my 21st Birthday, Java dates, adventures to Maple Tree Inn to delight in pancakes and the laughter of friends, H.E.L.P. day (which is a day for advising and senior planning and good seminars on life during and after college—time to start thinking more about finances and insurance, for me!), and lots and lots of school work!

My favorite class this semester has been an upper level …

Why did I come to Houghton?

Thursday, March 03, 2011, at 12:35 pm

My journey to Houghton was an unexpected one. I began my first year of college at a small classical college in Chicago. My experience there was invaluable and enjoyable, yet as my interests narrowed I knew that I wanted to explore the idea of transferring to a Christian college. Being a transfer student has some perks: when flipping through college catalogs, speaking with students & admissions representatives and visiting campuses, the added experience and insight which I had into exactly what I wanted and needed allowed me to search out the perfect fit for me.

My college wish list was specific (and Houghton has far exceeded all of these hopes of mine):

-After attending a secular college, having a committed Christian community had also become even more important to me. …

Revolution

It’s a humbling thing to realize how easy it is to live in a bubble. Even when I hear about global news and events, these things often feel so distant from my own life that I find thoughts and prayers entering my mind and leaving as quickly as they came when I turn

Egypt!

my attention back to the moment-by-moment chaos of my life. However,  (and perhaps this is one of the greatest gifts of studying abroad) once you’ve seen and touched and loved a country and its people, it’s almost impossible to maintain this sort of distance. And now Egypt—this country that I have come to care about so much—is being shaken by protests and …

Returning home!

Friday, January 21, 2011, at 10:37 pm

Hello blog readers!

Since I last wrote I officially made it back from Egypt to the U.S. of A., back to Texas (home) for Christmas break with my family, and now back to snowy New York for the semester!

“Re-entry” is a study abroad buzz word: that is, the journey of reflecting on time abroad and adjusting back to the culture at home. Truthfully, it’s a phrase that reminds me more of astronauts dramatically crashing into the atmosphere, but I’ve been really thankful for the way the entire Houghton community has been supportive and helpful in this process. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience abroad, nor a better experience coming back to campus now. I love my …
