- Things I’m involved in at Houghton:
- The Salvation Army Student Fellowship, The Houghton College Student Scholarship Fund Phonathon, and the fledgling Nerf Club.
- Houghton in five words or less:
- Learning For the Whole Man
- Myself in five words or less:
- Spiritually Hungry Fun Christian Writer
- More about me:
- I am currently a Junior at Houghton College with a Writing Major and a Psychology Minor. I am a Writing Major because, as Leo Tolstoy says, "A writer is dear and necessary for us only in the measure of which he reveals to us the inner workings of his very own soul" and I strive to learn to do that through my Houghton education.
My parents are Salvation Army officers and I served with them for four years as missionaries in Estonia. They are now the Corps Officers in Bangor, Maine, my adopted hometown. I am the president and founder of Houghton's unofficial Nerf Club and enjoy having fun around campus with my friends, The Tribe. - What I hope to be doing someday:
- Someday I hope to devote my life to serving God, either through my writing or as a missionary.

Okay, okay, I’m late. Sorry about this. But I’m going to go back in time about a month (March 12th to be exact) and tell you about one of the best nights of the year!
The International Banquet is an annual tradition that I have had the great pleasure of enjoying for the past three years. About 10% of Houghton students are internationals/TCKs and this event, put on by the Intercultural Student Association (ISA), is a chance to celebrate the world and for all of us to show off …
Today was the most wonderful of days during the semester: H.E.L.P. day! H.E.L.P. day is a spring semester tradition that always brightens my day. On H.E.L.P. day each spring classes are canceled all day and the day is devoted to meeting with advisors, catching up on work, or just getting a chance to sleep in. This time for the first time during H.E.L.P. day there were helpful info sessions about different things. There were a bunch offered, but I went to four sessions.
First I went to a session called “What difference does it make being a Christian and an artist?” which was a lecture given by professor Ted Murphy, an art professor and also the one who …

UncategorizedSome Thoughts on Why I Came to Houghton (How on Earth Did I Get Here?)
Coming towards the end of my junior year and realizing that I only have one year left to my Houghton education has made me slightly introspective. Well, that and the fact that I’m writing a memoir for my extended narrative class. I remember back in the crazy days of college searching when I didn’t have any idea what I was looking for. It was then that I decided that not having anything to look for was, in itself, something to look for. In short, I needed a purpose.
As I waded through the flood of college brochures, probably enough to kill a small forest, I saw a lot that interested me. Some schools had cool sounding academic programs …

Well, Spring 2011 is well underway and so far my classes are awesome! Tomorrow starts my third week and I am loving how things are going. The comic I have shared with you is in reference to my poetry class. I am a writing major but poetry has never been my strength, which is exactly why I chose it. I like to think that when I graduate from Houghton I will be a well rounded writer and be able to write poetry, prose, and fiction. I started out before Houghton as primarily a prose writer because of my blogging but during my sophomore year I took several fiction based classes and have at least learned how to …
